PIT Finalization Before Leaving Vietnam: What to Check

A tax review should be done before an assignment ends or the individual permanently leaves Vietnam — whether formal finalization is required, and how, depends on the person's circumstances.

Overview

Departure Is a Trigger, Not a Formality

Leaving Vietnam at the end of an assignment closes out a tax position that's been building for however long the individual was present — whatever residency status applied, whatever was withheld, and whatever deductions were or weren't claimed. Reviewing this before departure, not after, is what determines whether formal finalization is actually required and how.

Checklist

What the Review Should Cover

A pre-departure review needs to establish a complete final position, not just confirm the last payslip.

  • Final Vietnam tax-residency status for the relevant period
  • The applicable tax period
  • Total taxable employment income, including relevant overseas employment income
  • Tax already withheld or paid
  • Applicable deductions
  • The resulting balance — due, or refundable
Watch For

Why This Matters More for Some Assignments

This matters most where residency status was still provisional for part of the assignment — that's exactly the situation that needs reconciling before departure, since a provisional non-resident treatment applied during the year can turn out to be resident once the full period is counted, changing the scope of taxable income and the tax already withheld against it.
